Gardening as Art 2

NMPAC is partnering with Lyndon Penner a radio celebrity / expert gardener and Megan Evans a talented Calgary clay artist to bring you a series of gardening talks and an opportunity to make some Christmas gifts and garden artifacts. Participants will enjoy lively discussion, a great social experience and learn how gardening is an art form that can be practiced with the same zest and enthusiasm as any of the other arts.

Enjoy creating unique stoneware objects and engage with other passionate gardeners!

"This course will be a continuation of the 'Gardening as Art' course started in April, but fear not! If you didn't take this course the first time around, you're still going to have a great time and learn a lot! Having attended the first part of the course is NOT a pre-requisite for attending the second; in fact, even if you've never gardened before in your life, you're sure to have a good time and discover lots of new ways to be artistic in your life and garden! This course will feature a presentation on the use of garden focal points, as well as a look at sexuality in the garden- while the subject of nudity is prominent in both sculpture and paintings; it's uncommon to look at plants and flowers this way! You'll never look at a blossom quite the same way again..."

Monday, January 16, 2012

It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of Sean Kunz to the position of Arts Centre Technical Specialist at North Mount Pleasant Arts Centre. Sean will be starting work on February 1, 2012.

Sean has been teaching the advanced Potter’s Wheel Studio class at North Mount Pleasant for the past two years. He completed his BFA degree at ACAD in 2005, and attended a Residency at Harbourfront Centre in Toronto in 2006. Sean has an active studio practice and his functional wares are prized for their elegance and sophistication. http://seankunzceramics.com/

In his Artist Statement Sean says “ Handmade objects connect us to the people who make them, and the craftsmanship is a reflection of the maker’s time and energy. In increasingly dense urban societies where technology can serve to alienate us, a virtual environment cannot replace a thoughtful handle.”

This is also the time to acknowledge the significant efforts of Aura Carney and Mindy Andrews in keeping the Studio work flow moving over the past few months, since the untimely passing of Bob Reimer in October. This has been a difficult time for all the staff, and we look forward to renewing the level of expertise that the Arts Centre is recognized for. Michael Benoit - Supervisor, North Mount Pleasant Arts Centre
